How to Start a Business: A Simple, Step-by-Step Guide

BY DEB

Starting a business is not an easy task but it doesn’t have to be as difficult as you think. There are some basic steps that you need to take when starting a business and in this post, I will give you some advice on all of those steps.

Step 1: Pick a business name

The first and most important thing is to choose a unique name that everyone knows. A name is a brand and it should come with a sense of trust. But if you don’t pick a business name correctly then you may be screwed and in the long run, lose a lot of customers who will think of you as just another business in their area. Think about a business you would actually like to own. For example, if you are passionate about technology then create a startup that makes the products you are interested in. There are tons of guides and sites that have been made that give you some tips on how to pick a name. I suggest you get an account at LinkedIn and read their guide on how to choose a good business name for your business.

Step 2: Get your business online

Your business needs to be online. And it needs to be accessible to the world. You need to be able to create a website for your business and put it online. If your business is going to be successful, your business needs to be accessible to everyone with access to the internet. That means it needs to be accessible to the whole world. How can you put your business online? You can easily do it using services such as Joomla! CMS, WordPress, Mambo, Drupal, etc. By having a website, you have made it possible to reach the whole world and spread the word. But what will your website do for you?

Step 3: What should my business do?

Start thinking about the type of business that you are going to run. In my next post, I will go through some ideas for a potential business to run. Step 4 Why should I do this business? The most important question that you need to ask yourself when starting a business is “Why am I doing this?” When you have this answer you are in a great position to decide on what your business will actually do and whether you are likely to succeed in it. Step 5 Choosing a business name Now it is time to decide on the business name and its brand. It is important that you choose a brand name that stands for something and not something generic. Most of the time, a company’s name has to be an accurate reflection of its business activity and offer.

Step 4: What are the business’s goals?

As a business owner, you must always remember what is the main purpose of your business. This is why you should consider these 4 specific goals for your business: Profit To make a profit is the most fundamental purpose of any business. You don’t have to be a mastermind to understand that there are only 2 kinds of businesses; low margin and high margin. A low-margin business is a business that involves a low overhead or the least amount of money spent on the purchase of goods, services, or materials to produce them, such as a barbershop or nail salon. The business owner must also think about having a limited selection of products to sale such as a regular barbershop, but only providing us with 9 kinds of shaves, shampoos, and beard combs.

Step 5: How much do I need to start a business?

When starting a business the first thing that you need to do is calculate how much you need to start the business. You need to ask yourself: What will my family have to sacrifice in order for me to start a business? What will my friends have to sacrifice in order for me to start a business? What are my expenses? How will I fund the business? Based on your answers you will need to calculate how much you need to start the business. It is worth it to note that most businesses do not grow organically so you need to be prepared to invest money in the business to grow it. If you do not have the financial capacity for that then maybe it’s better to think about other alternatives.

Step 6: How to get started

After you have made sure that you have identified your target market and they can find your product or service they are willing to pay for, it is time to talk to them. What do I mean by talking to them? In most cases, you will want to use some form of medium. We are going to talk about emails and blogs. You want to get your product or service in front of people as much as possible, you can start by paying a monthly fee for a blog or online magazine and get exposure to people who will be your potential customers. The next step in selling is getting out there and meeting your target market face to face. Here is where you need to be persistent and have something on your side, something that will get you in the door and keep you there until you have talked to as many people as possible.

Conclusion

Starting a business is a lifelong commitment. It’s important to stay motivated and focused as it takes a lot of hard work to succeed. However, you shouldn’t make the mistake of thinking that the hard work is over after your first few years in business. Most successful entrepreneurs will tell you that they’ve gone through a number of bad and good periods. The majority of the time you are not at the peak of your success. It is more important that you stay focused on the ultimate goal and if you ever feel like giving up or take a break to recharge your batteries, you should do so. There are no shortcuts.
